If there’s currently a firewall targeting the tag “some-machine”, and I later create a new machine with that tag, would the firewall be applied to the machine automatically?

Yes I believe that will be the case … I just tested it with an existing firewall and existing droplet - added the tag to the firewall and then I added the tag to the droplet. When I checked the firewall members, that droplet was included.
