Question

Inbound and outbound mail options

 • Posted May 29, 2014

Hi, It seems there’s an embarrassment of riches when it comes to choosing a mail set-up. I’m going to need POP3/IMAP and SMTP across multiple virtual domains (LAMP on Ubuntu). Looks like Postifx is a solid choice for SMTP (the DO tutorial looks excellent). How about the POP3/IMAP side of things? Is there a tool that handles both delivery and despatch or will I need one program to handle SMTP and another for POP3/IMAP.

Happy to dig into the tutorials , but I thought I’d try to get a few thoughts on the best way forward for a solid, secure and well tried mail set-up first.

OK. Will check it out. Thanks :)

There’s bits of overlap, but generally you’ll have one program to handle SMTP and another for POP3/IMAP. There are other options but Postfix is basically the standard option at this point. For POP3/IMAP, again there are multiple options but Dovecot will most likely be where you end up.

This tutorial should point you in the right direction for setting up email on a basic Postfix/Dovecot stack:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-set-up-a-postfix-e-mail-server-with-dovecot
