with initial password i was able to login as root then it required for password to be reset which i did but then it does not recognized the new password i set which was a simple one any tips? thanks

You mentioned console, are you using the DO console from your account to reset the password? I’m suspecting some of your keyboard keys aren’t mapped correctly. So typing ‘$’ or even a letter doesn’t translate to the corresponding letter in the console. So try to reset the password using SSH. This way there is native key mapping.
