Is it possible to import db tables to mysql 5.7 from msyql 8.0.19?

Posted May 16, 2020 3.8k views

I’m in the process to transfer a wordpress site to a new droplet which uses an older version of mysql 5.7.23. I want to start with a clean install a database, so only the necessary tables will come to the new database, but the old server is using mysql 8.0.19.
Can I import tables from mysql 8.0.19 to a database using an older mysql 5.7? If yes, do I need to do anything beside importing the mysqldump?

You should have no/little issues

  • I don’t mean to question your answer, but you know this question because of experience, documentation, or best guest.

    • experience and best guest

There are some strict changes to some data types.

Also lots of other things such as server setup. But the actual import should work

Of course I’m sure you will be tuning both. So some checks and testing before fully switching right.

      • Thanks.

How do you know that database is working without any issues?
For example, I use the database for a WordPress site, does the ability to create, save, and publish posts and seeing the website running indicates that everything is working OK?

Or there can be other symptoms?

What are the symptoms a database isn’t working OK?

        • There are probably better ways and any real DBA’s will give better options.

Export a large table from Both. Data only.
Then do a diff or MD5 the file and compare hashes.

The only possible issues I can think of are dates.

Of course as you import it may point out any issues.

The other option is set up a clone of your wordpress and point that at the clone dB.
Then give your site a good once over.

          The key thing is:
Your going to KEEP your old dB running while doing tests right…
if it fails. Fix data and reimport.
