Does anyone know if /proc/sys/fs/file-max is actually the maximum open files we can have? On OpenVZ there’s another limit at /proc/user_beancounters that usually sets it at 5500 or so for a VPS. I get 49790 from file-max, anyone know if this is the actual max # of open file descriptors allowed?

Great! Another nice thing about not being on OpenVZ.

Currently have a lot of VPS’s at WiredTree but running into limits on max open files because of OpenVZ so looking for options.

thanks
It should be /proc/sys/fs/file-max as we do not set any limits for the maximum open files (it’s set by the kernel).
