Thank yo so much! Had the same problem with NodeJS, NPM and Gulp being Killed. I was trying everything, when I found your reply and realized that I’ve forgot to configure swap!!
Are you seeing any error messages? On a 512MB droplet, I’d hazard to guess that you are running out of memory. Even with only a few users, you’ll be much better off with at least 1GB.
