The first time you log into your droplet (if you do not set it up with an ssh key) you will be prompted to change your password. The droplet will allow you to log in and then will prompt you to enter:
If you fail to enter your current password correctly at the first prompt your session is disconnected. It sounds like you are attempting to enter your new password (rather than your current one) at this first prompt.
