My LAMP + MediaWiki server is running slow

Posted July 12, 2014 3.5k views

I created a droplet with LAMP preinstalled and then downloaded Mediawiki. The Wiki site works well, but sometimes pages load very slowly, and other times very fast.

I have the same problem when accessing the server via ssh: it seems to have hiccups every few seconds.

I ran the top command and “mysql” seems to jump to the top of the list every few seconds, taking aprox. 25% of CPU.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? Thanks!

  • Try pinging and monitor the latency results. I am having latency issues on my droplet in the SFO1 datacenter that is causing similar symptoms.

Most my pings are ~24ms, but it will spike anywhere from 400-3000ms every once in a while, which causes page loading issues.

This may have been fixed with the recent networking patch for the SFO-1 DC.
