how do we know there is a kernel mismatch? looks like we’re going up and down, server disappears for some time, can not reach it over the network

You can check for a kernel mismatch by reviewing the directories in /lib/modules and ensuring that the newest kernel version listed there matches the version you have selected in the control panel for your droplet under Settings->Kernel

Generally a kernel mismatch will not cause sporadic network issues so if you continue running into problems you may want to open a support ticket.
