I just created my first ubuntu node to test how fast I’m able to deploy some microservices driven by java-8 and spring-boot .
Why are there just outdated java 6 java 7 runtimes available, and no java 8?
To inject an openjdk-8 by myself is not really a problem; but to test some infrastructure with 100 nodes in the future, I would expect java 8 as a default option.
If this is a resource issue, you could get rid of obsolete java-6.

Our Ubuntu 14.04 image is based on a default LTS server installation. We do not currently install additional packages or repositories (aside from adjusting the defaults to use our mirrors of the official repos in order to save bandwidth and increase speed).
In the scenario where you would be spinning up 100+ nodes you could create a single droplet, install any additional needed packages and make any configuration adjustments and then create a snapshot of it. Then you can spin up as many copies of your configuration as you want by using the snapshot image instead of the official OS image.
