@kamaln7 how about if i do a website with a personal portofolio and i post there a services list ? Could i use the free version ?
Yes, that would be okay.
A non commercial website being one that does not sell goods? If it was for a clients social network site, would that be okay?
A self-signed certificate usually appears as “untrusted” is most browsers as the browser can’t verify that the certificate is actually valid and is created by you, the owner of the website.

StartSSL offers valid signed certificates for free (as long as you use them on non-commercial websites).
Is a self signed one/free SSL better than a bought one?
That’s correct.

You can set up a self-signed certificate:
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-create-a-ssl-certificate-on-apache-for-ubuntu-12-04
https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-create-a-ssl-certificate-on-nginx-for-ubuntu-12-04

Or use a free SSL certificate:

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-set-up-apache-with-a-free-signed-ssl-certificate-on-a-vps
