Question

NOOB : Desktop ?

 • Posted January 15, 2013

Helllooo !

So … I’m a complete Noob and I have a question (Don’t blame me :( ) : I have installed a lightweight desktop environment into my VPS, but I wanted to know if it is possible to install a better desktop environment like Ubuntu 12.10 ? And how to ?

I don’t know if my question is easy to understand … :/

Anyway, thanks for your answers.

The console didn’t work as it only showed text mode. I managed to get it work with TightVNC Viewer from my PC. It needs to start the “vncserver” on the server side first.

Thanks!

There is no configuration necessary you just launch the Ubuntu Desktop image as a new virtual server and then click on “Access” > “Console”

I’m using the console from Chrome browser. The keyboard works fine with Ubuntu server console access. How’s your VNC console configured to run with the Ubuntu image? Do I need to configure VNC server in some ways before using it?

Thanks!

If you got special characters while typing it’s most likely an issue with your keyboard layout.

Hi,

I’m testing Ubuntu Desktop (12.04 & 12.10 64bit) and got stuck in VNC console. Managed to get login but it showed some special characters when typing.

Any help?

Thanks!

Click on the virtual server in the servers menu, then click on “Access”, then click on “Console”.

Thanks

Hello,

So I choose Ubuntu 12.10 X32 Desktop, and then wich tool I have to use to access to the Desktop ?
I think it will be a good thing to make an “How to…” for the noob like me ^^"

Thanks

You can save yourself the trouble and just select one of the “Desktop” labelled Ubuntu distributions from the Images section when creating your virtual server and it will already be installed for you.
