All I can get console access is to run the javascript VNC client from the browser. Can I run my own VNC desktop client to access the console without doing it in the browser?

The VNC service used by the web console is not available to outside clients. You can install a VNC service within your droplet or use SSH to access your droplet from outside the web console.
