Question

owncloud one-click downloads videos instead of playing them back

Ubuntu One-Click Install Apps

I remember this working with previous owncloud one-click instances. Now, however, it no longer plays back MP4 videos.... it downloads them instead of popping up a video player and playing it.

Does anyone know if this is an owncloud issue or if this is an issue with one-click install app?

Which version of Owncloud are you using?
The newer versions should come with a builtin video player: https://github.com/owncloud/files_videoplayer
And the earlier versions needs an app, like: https://apps.owncloud.com/content/show.php/HTML5+Video+Player?content=173950

I’m using the version in provided by the one-click install owncloud droplet. It says the version is 9.1.4.

The thing is, I think this was working just fine in older versions of the one-click install owncloud droplet. Did something change?

  • I’m searching around, but I can’t seem to find anyone who had this issue with recent owncloud versions.

Which browser are you using? Can you try a different, just to see if the problem might be the browser.

And have you tried with different videos (preferably with a different codec)? Maybe it’s just a problem with the codec of that file.

    • Negative. No videos work.

I dragged and dropped a webm to upload it. When I click to play it in owncloud, it just downloads.

Something is wrong with the installation.

    • Also, I tried this on 3 different computers: a windows box, a macbook, and a chromebook.

But, they were all running Chrome. My understanding is that chrome has the widest base of support for video playback. I’ll try firefox later today.

    • I think the default video player is suppose to be installed under /var/www/owncloud/apps. If you look in that directory, it doesn’t exist.
