parent directory writable by the server

Posted on June 15, 2014

Hi! I have a huge problem. I hired a freelancer to transfer my site to Digital Ocean. Now he’s gone and blocked from Freelancer.com. When I try to update my site I get only error message:

“Unable to create directory wp-content/uploads/2014/06. Is its parent directory writable by the server?”

Does this mean that my site is totally ruined? Any help is more than appreciated.

Hello!

No, this means that Wordpress does not have the required permissions to write to the folder/directory that it wants. Most likely when the freelancer transferred your website to DigitalOcean the permissions for the folder changed when he exported it from the old hosting solution.

What you have to do is to log into the console for your Droplet/server and change the folder permissions and see if that solves the problem, it is a pretty simple task and quick task for someone who is familiar with bash (what Linux uses) but most likely very confusing for someone who has no experience.

If you do not want to try and hire a new freelancer for this I can try my best to explain the steps. But if the freelancer left the project before he finished, it might be a lot more work than just this. This is just one error, there might be several more.

Sincerely, Jon Brede.
