Putty: No supported authentication methods available (server sent: keybaord-interactive)

I’m currently in the process of losing my mind whilst setting up a 2fa + sshkey login for my debian 11 server.

I want my client (elia) to login with a private-key and a google-auth otp. After entering the private-key’s passphrase and entering the google-auth otp, I get this error from putty:

No supported authentication methods available (server sent: keybaord-interactive)

Here is the full dialoge:

From the configuration you posted, everything seems fine. I would suggest verifying the .google_authenticator file in elia’s home directory and restarting the SSH daemon to make sure new changes are in effect.

Make sure the user elia has a .google_authenticator file in their home directory. This file is needed for the google-authenticator PAM module. You can create it by running google-authenticator as the user elia.

Finally, check the logs (/var/log/auth.log or /var/log/secure, depending on your distribution) for more detailed error messages, these logs might give you more clues about what is happening.or.so
