Questions About SSDs

Posted on February 14, 2013

I’m considering running a database on DigitalOcean, but I’ve never used SSDs before and I’m concerned about reliability, so two quick questions:

 1. You’ve said elsewhere that the SSDs have a RAID setup - is this RAID 10 or another configuration?
 2. What’s the model of the SSDs? I’m interested in looking up any information I can find on their failure rates/modes, as well as whether they include a capacitor or other battery-backup system, to ensure that recently-written data is protected in the event of a power loss.

Thank you!

1.I believe its RAID 5 not 10.
2.I can’t help you with that.

We run hardware RAID and have a mix of different RAID configurations and harddrives because we are always reviewing system performance to ensure stability across the cloud.

Regardless of which provider you go with if you are running a DB you should always have backups, not just of your server but depending on the sensitivity of your data you may want to look into creating a slave DB that replicates live from the master as another backup measure.
