Are there any potential threats to account/VPS security regarding the current incident or is it purely a performance issue(or is there no way of knowing)? I’m leaving my droplet offline for the time being – not sure if it’s an over-reaction but I thought I may as well for the time being.

Hey there,
I’m assuming you’re referring to the ongoing Networking - Multiple Regions incident.
As the status page notes, the impact here is networking performance to and from our SFO datacenters, as well as a few other routes between regions, due to an upstream issue with networking providers.
You may see poor network performance (slowness, packet loss, etc.) for Droplets and other services talking to/from SFO and these other impacted regions. There is no threat to your account or services though – this is a networking incident, not a security incident.
Hope that helps! - Matt.
