Is adding the linked code to /etc/nginx/conf.d/example.com.conf to same as adding to /etc/nginx/sites-available/example.com if im using server blocks?

It is the same as long as you have an include directive in your nginx.conf that specifies the path to that file. I don’t see such a statement in the default nginx.conf, so you will need to add it.
