Setting up website at IP address, ready to set it up on domain, unsure how.

The subject is basically where I am. I know every time I log into the console, it prompts me to set up a domain, but it also moves the site into html.old. Have I messed myself up by working on it while it was only available via IP address? I ask that because a while back I toyed around with an old website and had it set up at the domain from the get-go.

If not, what do I do first, let the console walk me through setting it up on the domain? Editing the domain settings in Wordpress itself? Or something else? I’ve already updated the domain name servers with my domain provider. I also want to ensure it is HTTPS configured, but I think I get the process for that.

Running on the “Ubuntu WordPress on 18.04” preconfigured droplet.

Hello, @pjarrow91

The process is not that complicated. Let me try to explain what you’ll need to do.

You need to make sure that the virtual host associated with the website is updated to match the domain name, e.g make sure that the server_name block in the nginx configuration file is set to the domain name.

Also you can check that the site and home_url are set to the domain name as well. You can do this by pasting this code in your wp-config.php file:

Also you need to adjust the DNS as well. You need to point your A record to the IP address of your server. Keep in mind that the DNS changes might take up to 24 hours due to ISP cache and standard propagation time.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for getting back to me. It looks like I’d actually solved most of it, but chrome was being weird and lying to me even after a full refresh of the cache and everything.

Restarted the computer and the site is now working at domain dot com reliably.

My next step is to get myself set up for https, as some light e-commerce is going to be going in in the coming months. Also, I hate seeing that gray “Unsecured connection”.
