By default the username you will use when accessing your droplet via ssh or the console in the control panel is “root” (this differs on FreeBSD where the user is “freebsd” and on coreos where the default user is “core”).

The password you enter will be the one emailed to you when you created your droplet. On Linux there is no visual feedback whatsoever when you are typing in your password (no ***** is displayed). This will not prevent you from typing in the password and pressing enter.

If you set up ssh keys with your droplet you will need to set up a root password before you can access the console. To do this, log in via ssh and run the passwd command. After doing this you will be able to log in via the console as the root user with the password you defined.

Heya,

If you’re referring to the recovery console this will help you. If you typically log in to your Droplet using a password, or if you have set a password for the root or a sudo user on the system, you already have the credentials you need to log in.

You can check our tutorial on How to regain access to your droplet with the recovery console.

Hope that this helps!
