Hello:
This process normally takes me 10-15 minutes with a normal host, but Digital Ocean is so non-user friendly (for non tech person), am still seeking info as to how I can download my site via SFTP. I have created new root password, but now am told it’s a ‘one time password’ and I have to “login to the Droplet at the console or over ssh to set a permanent password before using sftp”. Why all these crazy steps? Just give me a single password when I generate it and that’s it… anyway, how can I “login to the Droplet at the console or over ssh to set a permanent password before using sftp”
My goal: simply to be able to use Filezilla to access my site and droplet so I can archive the contents. No Unix commands. No command prompts. That’s it! But here on DO, it seems like rocket science to be able to do that, for me at least, versus normal hosting service.

Hi @camerado,
SFTP is available by default with no additional configuration on all servers that have SSH access enabled. It’s secure and easy to use, but comes with a disadvantage: in a standard configuration, the SSH server grants file transfer access and terminal shell access to all users with an account on the system. Having said that, you’ll need to create a user that is not root and connect to it.
If you are uncertain on the how to, I’ll recommend checking out the following article here :
