Stretch to buster: How to migrate to new "PERSISTENT NAMES" scheme for interfaces?

Posted on January 23, 2020

While still supported by debian buster, the “PERSISTENT NAMES” scheme will be dropped off in the future and the “predictable names” scheme will be taken into use.

Is there anything DigitalOcean virtualization related stuff going on which one might want to take into account before making the switch?

Heya,

Just came across this answer and decided to write some general guidelines for anyone who comes across this in the future despite the old question.

The switch from “PERSISTENT NAMES” to “predictable names” shouldn’t affect your DigitalOcean droplets because DigitalOcean doesn’t interfere with the network interface naming on your servers. The naming of the network interfaces is controlled by the OS, so any changes that Debian makes will be reflected in your droplets.

However, I would advise checking any scripts or applications you have that rely on specific network interface names before making the switch to ensure they continue to work correctly. You might need to amend them to accommodate the new naming scheme.

Regardless, whenever you’re making changes to your system, it’s always a good idea to create backup snapshots of your droplets, just in case anything goes wrong.

Learn more about predictable network interface names in Debian from the official Debian documentation here and about droplet backups from the DigitalOcean documentation here.

Hope that this helps!
