Sudden WordPress White Screen of Death

  • Posted August 30, 2014

Hey all. I’m using Ubuntu 14.04 and just started building my first WordPress site. I got LAMP and WordPress installed and was able to access my admin panel. I tried to upload a theme that I bought, and was asked to enter SSH credentials. I followed this DigitalOcean guide:

Immediately, I got the white screen of death. In the console, I cd’d into the wp-content/themes folder, assuming its upload was responsible, but it’s not in there. All the keys appear to be in the right place. I went through the tutorial exactly as it’s written. Any ideas?

Thanks so much. I look forward to becoming a part of this community.

hmmm…might be permissions. When you upload stuff using ssh, then that can set the permissions for those folders as your user. Wordpress needs its files to be set as the apache user (generally www-data)

Try this: ssh in as your user. then run this command (assuming your web-folder is /var/wwww) sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www

check your website again. Does it work now?
