There is no proceed button on the Connection Information screen after activating a plugin or theme in WordPress.

When I try to activate certain WordPress themes or plugins the Connection Information page comes up, but there is no “Proceed” button. The formatting on the page is also different as there is just text on a white background.

On other themes or plugins the same screen comes up but it is formatted normally and there is a Proceed button. In this case, everything works fine after I enter the sftp information.

We are using Ubuntu 14.04.5 and WordPress 4.9.5. Any help is appreciated.

If WordPress is prompting you for SFTP/FTP information when installing plugins and themes this is a sign that your file permissions are not set up properly. WordPress only prompts for this information if it finds that it does not have permission to write the files needed itself.

If you set the ownership of your web files to the same user that Apache runs as “www-data” this prompt should no longer appear and it may also resolve the other issue you are seeing.

chown -Rf www-data:www-data /var/www;
