Unable to log into my droplet. Error: -bash: xmalloc cannot allocate 1 bytes (771457024 bytes allocated)

I have been using the droplet normally for approximately 7 days now. Had encountered no issues whatsoever. But the previous night, I was unable to log in. Every attempt was terminated with this message:

-bash: xmalloc: /usr/src/local/bash/bash-4.3-patched/parse.y:4880: cannot allocate 1 bytes (771457024 bytes allocated)

Now the the memory requirements of my application, to my knowledge, do not exceed 5GB at max. And as logging in is out of the question, I have no idea what the problem is. Or how to solve it. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try the console in your panel? If that fails too, you have to restart the droplet.
