Upgrading Ubuntu

System ToolsUbuntu 16.04

Hi, there

In my putty is appearing:

Authenticating with public key
Welcome to Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (GNU/Linux 4.4.0-138-generic x86_64)

Get cloud support with Ubuntu Advantage Cloud Guest:

212 packages can be updated.
15 updates are security updates.

New release ‘18.04.1 LTS’ available.
Run 'do-release-upgrade’ to upgrade to it

May i just do this upgrade… or are there more implications?
Thanks in advance.

Hey friend,

Great question, you were right to ask first. If this is a production server, I would not upgrade from Ubuntu 16 to 18 in place. I would do “apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y” to update your existing packages, but that is the furthest I would go.

To migrate to Ubuntu 18, I would create a new server and ensure that it was set up properly for my application, then I would migrate my application to it. This has the least implications on a production server.
