Uploading files to Spaces via a Frontend WordPress Page

Posted July 6, 2020 1.2k views

We operate a multi-vendor eCommerce store focused on selling digital products. We would like that our third-party vendors via some Frontend Pages of our WordPress website can upload files and that they are saved in Digital Ocean’s Spaces.

We are looking for a scalable solution, reducing resource use of our WordPress server. What is the most resource-efficient way to do this?

1) Upload Files to WordPress, then from WordPress to Spaces?
2) Upload files directly to Spaces?

Please note, we also need to offer functionality in WordPress Frontend and Backend pages to query and list stored files by vendor and show/search them.

What is the best practice to do this?

@WordPressHeavyUser The simplest solution is that you could give a try. It supports DO Spaces and will allow you to offload your media by just uploading them to the native WordPress Media Library.

It may not offer all you need, but would at least let you do the first point you mentioned with ease.

Hi there,

Thank you. But here I want a top-notch solution not a compromise of what is just easy. If I upload first to WordPress - I am not using all the benefits of Digital Download Spaces. Also my website will need 2 x CPU and processing power, first to upload to WordPress, then to Digital Ocean. I am ready to develop something very tailor-made. I am not looking for standard software.

Hello, @WordPressHeavyUser

We already have a really cool tutorial on how to setup this. You can check it out here:

In this tutorial, we will use a WordPress plugin that works directly with DigitalOcean Spaces to use it as the primary asset store. The DigitalOcean Spaces Sync plugin routes the data of our WordPress media library to Spaces and provides you with various configuration options based on your needs, streamlining the process of using object storage with your WordPress instance.

Hope that helps!

DigitalOcean Spaces Sync offers direct compatibility with DigitalOcean Spaces. You can use it to connect your media library to your Space, and it offers options for storing your items on your server and Space, or on your Space alone.
  • Hi @alexdo As at July you recommended the plugin in the linked article above (still till now), the plugin in there is broken and useless.

    Many have issues with it.

If it ain’t an official DO plugin that is maintained by DO, please don’t recommend it.

Your recommendation is breaking people’s production websites.

    • Hello,

I’m sorry to hear that you had negative experience with the recommended plugin. My goal here was to help as other users have used the plugin in the past without having issues.

I will highly advise to always backup your website before installing any plugins. Sometimes having multiple plugins might cause issues and further downtime for your website.
