Question

What file types are disallowed to upload to wordpress webpages

Hello, I am running a Wordpress droplet using DO.

I am using Wordpress’ Browser Dashboard to manage my site.

I want to upload an executable file to the page however I am unable to because when I try this it returns an “unacceptable file type” error message.

Can you direct me to the acceptable file types to upload to my droplet?

Thanks.

For reference here is the go-by from Wordpress on how to Upload files.

To Upload a File with the Browser Uploader To upload a file for later use: on the Dashboard menu, click Media, and then click Add New to display the “Upload New Media” page. -Or- To upload a file in a page: on the Dashboard menu, click Pages, click Add New to display “Add New Page,” and then, on the Upload/Insert menu, click the icon that represents the type of file you want to upload. -Or- To upload a file in a post: on the Dashboard menu, click Posts, click Add New to view the “Add New Post” page, and then, on the Upload/Insert menu, click the icon that represents the type of file you want to upload. Below the Select Files button, click the link to “Browser uploader." browseruploader2.png When the Browser uploader appears, click the Choose File button to display a dialog box. In the dialog box, select the file you want to upload. To select multiple files, hold down the SHIFT key (for PC users) or the COMMAND key (for Macintosh users). Click the Upload button.

Hi, @jweinstein86

WordPress supports uploading the following file types:

  • Image files such as .jpg .jpeg .png .gif .ico
  • Documents files like .doc, .xls, .ppt, .pdf .odt .psd
  • Audio files such as .mp3, .m4a, .ogg .wav
  • Video files like .mp4, .m4v (MPEG-4), .mov (QuickTime), ..wmv (Windows Media Video), .avi, .mpg, .ogv (Ogg), .3gp(3GPP), .3g2(3GPP2)

Please note that some of the below file types do have the potential be misused. That’s why WordPress doesn’t enable them by default.

  • Images such as .svg, .bmp
  • Document files like .psd, .ai, .pages
  • Code files such as .css, .js, .json
  • Video like .flv, .f4l, .qt

You can check the WordPress docs about this as well:

Hope that helps!

Regards, Alex
