Why do I need digital ocean dns?
My server already can manage the DNS. Any help?

You don’t necessarily need to use DigitalOcean’s nameservers to manage your DNS. You can manage your DNS from everywhere you want as long as it’s convenient for you! In most if not all tutorials on DigitalOcean, managing the DNS has been mentioned to be done on the platform so that’s more clearer for the user how to proceed. In reality, you are not obliged to do so but you can use whatever makes more sense for your needs.

When I use ISPConfig on my own server it doesn’t work. The DNS is managed on the server.
You’ll need to configure your domain(s) at the registrar to use your server as the name servers (in the WHOIS). Once that is done, you should be able to make changes via your control panel and have them go live - which is convenient, I agree.
However, most registrars require you to provide two IP addresses for name servers and that’s one reason to use another DNS provider’s DNS service - reliability.
If your server goes down then none of your DNS will work. If you’re not managing mail or DNS that points at other servers then it might not matter as much. Of course, a good solution is to have a second server acting as backup / secondary.
DigitalOcean DNS is very fast and very reliable, with 100s of POPs around the world. Plus, there is an easy to use control panel or API to manage the domains. It’s an extra step but DNS does not typically change that often after initial setup.

Can you confirm how did you configure your DNS to be managed on the server, have you installed any additional software on it, additionally, can you show us the nameservers you are using so that we might better understand your issue?

I setup the server with bind and ispconfig. The domain is hosted with namecheap. I am more familiar with godaddy, but in my previous experience I easily hosted a server with my ISP.
