I would like to know if running droplet 24x7 would cause extra charge otherwise I can turn it off when not in use.

You will be charged whether the droplet is on or off as no matter the state it is still an allocated resource. The only thing you will save in down times is bandwidth usage and the possibility of overages while the droplet is off.
