“DigitalOcean's swift scalability, excellent support, and competitive pricing made it a no-brainer for us to become partners and stay with DigitalOcean.”
-Fernando Marrero, Lead DevOps Engineer at Traject Data
Since its founding in 2020, Traject Data has established itself as a leading provider of APIs for clean and trusted SERP and e-commerce data. Based in Colorado, the company now processes two billion requests monthly with 99.95% uptime, serving over 48,000 customers worldwide—from small businesses to global enterprises. “We started small with most of our clients in North America,” explains Tomonori DeSimone-Igari, Product Manager at Traject Data. “Over time, we’ve grown our offerings and team, building a robust infrastructure to handle large volumes.”
The company operates with a focused team of approximately 30, including a dozen application engineers and two DevOps specialists who have guided their growth from 100 million scrapes per month to processing two billion monthly requests today. DigitalOcean’s infrastructure—including Droplets, VPCs, Spaces, and Managed Databases—has enabled this massive scale with cost-effective outbound traffic pricing that makes billions of requests economically sustainable.
As Traject Data expanded their operations, critical infrastructure challenges emerged that threatened to limit their growth potential. Managing outbound traffic costs became a primary concern, as processing billions of requests generates massive outgoing network traffic that proved cost prohibitive with previous providers. “The primary reasons we stay with DigitalOcean are definitely the affordable egress costs. So the outbound traffic cost is very affordable for us, which is very expensive at other platforms or providers,” says Fernando Marrero, Lead DevOps Engineer at Traject Data.
Performance consistency was another challenge. With customers expectating lightning-fast data delivery, the company needed infrastructure to maintain its reputation for speed and reliability, even under peak loads. “Our infrastructure is optimized for fast, high-scale scraping. We average roughly six seconds per request with a P90 at 10 seconds,” explains Tomonori. “What that P90 metric means is that even at our peak load, 90% of our requests return in 10 seconds or less.”
The company also required flexible computing resources to handle diverse workloads efficiently, from cost-effective processing for standard operations to high-performance computing for intensive scraping tasks. Their sophisticated anti-bot evasion techniques also demanded an adaptable infrastructure supporting real-time adjustments. “Our secret sauce is that we’re continuously evolving our techniques to stay ahead,” says Tomonori. “We can adapt in real time to ensure our clients get an uninterrupted data flow, even in challenging environments like Amazon, Walmart, and emerging marketplaces.”
DigitalOcean addressed Traject Data’s challenges through a multifaceted infrastructure approach that prioritized cost-effectiveness and performance. Our competitive outbound traffic pricing eliminated the cost barriers that made scaling economically sustainable. “DigitalOcean’s swift scalability, excellent support, and competitive pricing made it a no-brainer for us to become partners and stay with DigitalOcean,” says Fernando.
The flexibility of DigitalOcean’s computing resources proved crucial to Traject Data’s diverse operational needs. Our customizable VM configurations allow them to optimize costs while maintaining performance across different workload requirements. “The VM tiers are also very customizable,” notes Fernando. “Sometimes, we’ll use basic tier instance types to get a better bang for our buck. And then in other cases where we need the most performance CPU, we’ll opt for the dedicated CPUs to get that boost in performance.”
DigitalOcean’s comprehensive product suite now supports Traject Data’s entire infrastructure stack:
VPCs provide secure production and disaster recovery environments in Europe, protected by integrated cloud firewalls.
Droplets run their Node.js applications with critical services backed up using our Backups feature.
For data storage and delivery, they leverage Spaces for object storage, Spaces CDN for content distribution, and Managed MongoDB and Redis databases for reliable data management.
Beyond providing infrastructure products, DigitalOcean has established a dedicated technical partnership that maximizes Traject Data’s resource utilization. Their close communication with Raph, their Technical Account Manager, has been instrumental in optimizing their DigitalOcean deployment. “Our relationship with our technical account manager, Raph, has been amazing,” Fernando explains. “Raph has been instrumental in ensuring we get excellent value from our resources in DigitalOcean. The technical team that backs him is always eager to help us and constantly offers ideas for improvements for our platform.”
This collaborative partnership extends to strategic planning, with early insights into upcoming DigitalOcean features that allow Traject Data to align their roadmap accordingly. They also benefit from DigitalOcean’s comprehensive documentation and community resources. “The community docs are super helpful and oftentimes there’s a community doc that helps us hit the ground running with their services,” Fernando notes.
Traject Data’s partnership with DigitalOcean has allowed them to achieve remarkable scale while maintaining its performance standards. They successfully transformed their infrastructure to handle exponential request volume growth while maintaining enterprise-grade uptime and delivering consistently fast response times even during peak demand periods.
Traject Data is positioned for continued expansion with DigitalOcean’s global infrastructure. “In 2025, we’re going to expand our enterprise-scale data capabilities,” says Tomonori. “We want to refine how our systems handle even greater volumes of real-time requests and continue to deliver high reliability and low latency responses at scale.” Fernando summarizes the ongoing partnership: “We’ll continue to focus on delivering data quickly and reliably to our customers while expanding our systems as part of the highly available global infrastructure that DigitalOcean offers.”
