Any reason to use WordPress MU Domain Mapping?

Making a sub-domain site and changing its domain seems perfectly ok. But most of tutorials use WordPress MU Domain Mapping. Why are they using it?

While there are some use cases specific to using MU like providing blogs to others within a platform MU also allows you to keep a single codebase updated and to manage one central repository of themes and plugins rather than doing so individually across many sites.
