I thought I could point a .aero at any web host, but apparently this isn’t the case.

if you can edit your DNS records, you can edit the A record to point to the IP of your configured droplet
Any ICANN certified TLD or ccTLD will work with DO.
If your domain is a public one, which usually means being ICANN certified domain extension from ICANN authorized domain seller, and you have ability to edit its public DNS records (meaning NS, A and MX), you can point that to DO servers !!
.aero should work in that sense, given you have the ability (given by your domain registrant) to edit it’s DNS records.
