Hi,
Ok, let me explain that better. I have a static website already hosted (not on a DO droplet) and my domain (e.g. mydomain.com) points to that server. However I would like to use DO to provide an API through a subdomain, e.g., api.mydomain.com. Is that possible?
The tutorials I came across with all describe how to add a subdomain by first adding a domain on DO but I would like to keep the static website on my current host provider so (I think) I can’t change the DNS pointers to DO servers.

Awesome. Thanks for your help. I use cPanel and it can be accomplished through “Simple DNS Zone Editor”.
Your current provider should have some sort of interface for managing your DNS records. You can create a new record for the subdomain there pointing to the IP address of the DigitalOcean server.
The DNS manager in the DigitalOcean control panel is just there as a convenience for users who want to manage their DNS records and servers in the same place. If you’re happy with using the service from your other hosting provider or domain registrar, then there’s no reason to change.
