Hey all,
I’ve been trying to push myself into learning more and I read somewhere that it’s good to start contributing to open source projects. I recently learn about hacktoberfest and the idea is pretty cool but I’m feeling a bit nervous about posting code to projects I’m not the creator of. I also learn that DigitalOcean are hosting it so that’s why I’m posting it here.
As we know communities can be really negative about people not knowing something as such, what do you guys think, should I go for it or try to learn more before start something like that?
I’ve recently started learning (again) Python, PHP and some system administration but I feel the latter might not be applicable here

I believe that participating in Hacktoberfest is a great way to start!

This includes a step by step video on how to submit your first PR.
The main thing that I would say to keep in mind is that quantity is fun, quality is key!

I get how you feel. I use to feel the same way. What I can suggest is to use one of the languages you mentioned and find a really straight forward project. Use it a couple of days to understand how it works. Once you know how it works you can start contributing as code. It can be something simple at the beginning, maybe a typo or similar.
Don’t worry not all communities are negative, I dare to say that some GitHub open projects have a lot of friendly faces maintaining them.
Give it a try, no need to worry!
