Question

How bandwidth Usage calculated for a Media files downloading website?

I have just started a WordPress website with the OpenLiteSpeed web server on DigitalOcean. The site is brand new and has no traffic yet.

I have seen the bandwidth usage in the billing section, and those figures were horrifying for me.

I saw, “You have accrued 1179 GB of free data transfer. If you keep Droplets running at the same pace, your monthly pool should be 3000 GB.”

Now, I am very concerned about the future of my website.

I have planned to sell up to 10,000 WordPress themes and plugins (GPL License) on my website. Each theme or plugin’s .zip file size may vary from 1 MB to 100 MB.

My website for reference: https://fixoweb.com/

I am planning to promote my website and expect to receive up to 5,000 unique visitors per day. I think each visitor will download at least 200 MB files.

The big problem or question is how the bandwidth usage calculated for a Media files downloading website?

If a visitor downloads 1 GB file, then how much bandwidth will be counted on downloading.

Can you share the bandwidth count formula for a media files download website?

Please help…

Thank you!

Dear, Vijay.

I assumed the “bandwith” you mentioned before means the transfer data usage out from your server.

This issue is difficult to answer “the exactly how much bandwith you need to server for your visitors”.

I suggest to upgrade the VPS plan following your site growth. The bandwith not only count how much files that downloads but also when visitors access each page of your site will consume bandwith.

I hope this can help.

Hello @Technosatmedia

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you please tell me how do I see bandwidth usage of the single droplet only?

  • Dear, Vijay,

You can find your billable bandwidth usage in the Settings->Billing section of the control panel.

You may notice that the bandwith limitation are accumulated depends on the Droplets you have, here [https://www.digitalocean.com/docs/billing/bandwidth/](http://)

Bandwith counter for each droplet isn’t available unless you only have a droplet within your account.

I suggest you also use CDN that have caching feature such as Cloudflare, they can help reduce at least 50% bandwith usage of your static website content. So, your downloadable packages for visitor download, can fully serve by DigitalOcean.

    I hope this help.
