How do I connect my current Wordpress to my DigitalOcean server?

Posted on October 17, 2017

Hi. I have a simple Wordpress.com blog and a Namecheap.com domain (let’s call it myname.com) that was connected to the blog. I want to install plugins without having to pay the expensive WP Business plan, so I got a DigitalOcean account and a ServerPilot account to manage it.

First I followed the directions here to create a DO server and connect it to SP: https://serverpilot.io/community/articles/how-to-connect-a-server-to-serverpilot.html

Then I followed the directions here to create a WP on my DO server: https://serverpilot.io/community/articles/how-to-install-wordpress-on-digitalocean.html

(For this I used myname.com in the domain field, is that correct?)

Then I did this to config my DNS on DO: https://serverpilot.io/community/articles/how-to-configure-dns-on-digitalocean.html

(this was a little confusing, I just added @ and www lines, is that right?)

Lastly, I did this to point the DO nameservers from my Namecheap domain: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-point-to-digitalocean-nameservers-from-common-domain-registrars#registrar-namecheap

Now I want to make my WP work on it, but this is the part I’m stuck on. All I want to do is be able to write my articles on the WP dashboard like before, but also install plugins… how do I do this? It’s still not clear to me from the “create WP on DO server” article how I actually connect my current WP to this server. If anyone can tell me, that would be great.

Is it a problem that my site is currently a Wordpress.com, and not a Wordpress.org site?

Hi. It sounds like you need to export your content from your site hosted on WordPress.org and then import it into your new WordPress install on your DigitalOcean+ServerPilot server.

To export from WordPress.org and import to the new site, I believe the following article is what you need:
