How many sub-folders in Spaces is too many?

Posted on May 4, 2018

I need to store a large number of folders in spaces, up to 1-2 million. I can break them down into more sub-folders, but I’d rather not if possible.

My question is, if I have 2 million sub-folders within a single folder, will that slow down retrieval time of the files within those sub-folders?

The way that object storage generally works is that folders are simply tags or categories applied to each object. The object is not physically or programatically any more difficult to access for the underlying system. While all these subfolders in a single folder would result in needing to make several requests to receive the listing for that parent directory it should not affect the speed at which individual files are retrieved and served.
