How much support is available for sys admin?

 • Posted January 24, 2013

I’ve always had access to CPanel/WHM, but I’m thinking of trying Digital Ocean for several reasons (most notably, I want to do things that are hard or impossible on CPanel, such as running Debian or Ubuntu because of more modern OpenSSL than what you can get on CPanel and things like that).

But I’m just wondering how much support there is if I mess something up or get stuck. Am I totally on my own here or do I have some backup?

We’ll certainly do our best to guide you in the right direction.

We also recommend taking a snapshot of your server before doing any major work, this way if there is a configuration issue or something else you can always restore your server back to a working state.

That’s fine - I’m not looking someone to log into the server, so much as being there to help me recover from disaster if I totally mess things up.

Oh yes totally forgot about that you can either use the webchat:

Or just goto #DigitalOcean on Freenode if you have a chat client that supports IRC.

There is also a pretty good community chat on the IRC channel where many of the members can help you do things if you are confused.

In a sense you are on your own because we do not login to customer servers but we do help with troubleshooting errors that you run into, giving you suggestions on what to try or test and also we have a large amount of community articles to help new users to get started:
