How to host domain on Digital Ocean and Subdomains on separate hosts

Posted on July 3, 2014

A few months ago I moved my Wordpress site over from Dreamhost to Digital Ocean and set it up on Nginx so that it would be able to handle traffic spikes and load faster (which it does now, hooray!).

I still have the databases for 2 subdomains hosted on my Dreamhost account. Anybody know how I can host my domain at Digital Ocean, and host my subdomains on Dreamhost? Is that possible?

If not, what’s the easiest way to move them from Dreamhost to Digital Ocean?

Thanks!

Hi Nate,

What you need to do is create a DNS records for the subdomains pointing to wherever there hosted and make sure your main a record is pointed to your digital ocean droplet IP.

Since you talk about Dreamhost I consider that you are talking about the shared hosting services. The problem with shared hosting is that they use dinamic ip. I suggest to move your subdomains to Digital Ocean.
