I installed it using the tutorial. I can access this using ftp example.com but whenever I go to address ftp://example.com it aska for a login and password. No password or username is working.

I believe that by default ProFTPD does not allow root logins so you would need to create another user account to use for FTP services. If you followed the tutorial, your FTP users will be locked in their home directory so if you are planning to manage specific files via FTP you will want to create a user and point their home directory to that location.
