How can I protect against both possibilities without paying huge sums of money. I use Node for the server, and my poor little server on Digital Ocean probably couldn’t handle thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of hits. Then again, it might be a total flop, and I don’t want to pay hundreds of dollars for server time when I probably won’t need it. I always see these sites that get submitted to reddit, and their servers are down. It’s like, that was their chance to be huge, and they missed it. I can pay, using ad sense for as much server time as needed, probably. Right now, I’m paying $5 a month for Digital Ocean, which is great, because I don’t really need that much space. Is there anyway I could keep this set up, and just buy more processing power as needed?

Yes. While a reboot is required to do so, you can use the fast-resize tool in the control panel to quickly scale up your droplet should you need to. This option will increase your RAM and CPU but to make it quick it will not resize your disk image. This option will allow you to quickly scale up to a larger droplet should your traffic require it. Additionally you may want to look into services like CloudFlare for your droplet. This will provide additional capacity as it includes a caching mechanism as well as providing protection against DDoS threats.
