IPTables : "FATAL: Error inserting ip_tables (/lib/modules/..."

Posted on May 30, 2014

Hi,

I’m having major issues with iptables since changing my kernel (via the dashboard). I get the following error when running ‘sudo iptables -L’ :

FATAL: Error inserting ip_tables (/lib/modules/3.8.0-38-generic/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_tables.ko): Invalid module format iptables v1.4.12: can’t initialize iptables table `filter’: Table does not exist (do you need to insmod?) Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

I’ve tried reverting to the ‘original kernel’ and ‘sudo apt-get install linux-image-$(uname -r)’ and nothing works!

Please bear in mind that I’m fairly new to this kind of admin work (which is why I probably shouldn’t have messed with the kernel!).

Any ideas?

Sorry! I didn’t correctly shutdown the droplet after reverting to ‘Original Kernel’ I thought a reboot was ok!

1. Shutdown from terminal ‘sudo shutdown -h now’
2. Boot from control panel!

Please close.

Don’t feel bad, I made the exact same mistake. :)
