MAC Address based licensing questions

Posted on February 27, 2014

I need to run some specific commercial software that its license is tied to a particular MAC address. Are the network interfaces in DigitalOcean dynamic, meaning that the MAC address could change or i have the guarantee that it will never change.

Another question is what happens if i need to migrate everything to a new, bigger droplet. Is there a way i can clone o get the same network interface (i.e MAC address) than before?

Amazon handles this with Elastic network interfaces that can be moved from one instance to another.

We don’t currently offer an equivalent service to Amazon’s elastic network interfaces. Though we do attempt to return a previously used IP if you destroy a droplet and create a new one with the same name in a short period of time. If you need to retain your droplet’s IP address, file a support ticket and we’ll do our best to work with you.

Hi,

Sorry to reopen this issue but is not quite clear for me, as the OP asked more about MAC and the answer is more about IP.

So you’re saying that the MAC address IS guaranteed in the same droplet in the same location? (no destroying, no migrating to another data center).

I mean, I am interested to replicate a physical computer’s behaviour, i.e. to hold the MAC no matter what.

Thank you in advance, Lian
