I have installed proftpd on ubuntu and created a user but I am unable to login via filezilla as i get the above error, inspite of changing the password severally.

Hi, Can you try to login using sftp protocol and not ftp? Please make sure that your user in /etc/passwd has /bin/bash at the end of the line (that is the command shell line) Adrian
