Hi. I bought the standard (premium) intel server with 50GB Disk storage (shared) just to kick things off with my new website. But now, I want to upgrade (resize) my droplet to a dedicated (general purpose) one that has 25GB, 2vcpu, and 8GB RAM. The problem is, it’s not letting me choose this droplet as the Disk size is lower than the current one I have.
I was wondering if there’s a way to use this droplet as I really don’t wanna spend $120 on the general-purpose 2 which would be way too many resources for my current site. Thanks!

Hello @szuhaadalis ,
Thanks for reaching out! I understand you are trying to resize from a Basic Droplet with 50 GB disk to a General Purpose Droplet with 25 GB disk. As you rightly mentioned, we do not have the ability to resize servers that have been created or resized to a bigger disk, since we are unable to shrink the disk allocation. There is no safe way to shrink a Droplet’s disk partitions, and this is a risky procedure to undertake on any Linux system.
In this case, we suggest you to create a new Droplet of the desired plan, and migrate files from the old Droplet using SFTP. https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-sftp-to-securely-transfer-files-with-a-remote-server https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-filezilla-to-transfer-and-manage-files-securely-on-your-vps
If you would like a more thorough guide on transferring your data, we have a great tutorial series here: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorial_series/how-to-migrate-to-a-new-linux-server
Kindly note that the a new IP address will be assigned to the Droplet upon creation.
Hope this helps!
Cheers, Lalitha
