I’m trying to backup files from one droplet to another via rsync but getting the error:
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [Receiver] rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(601) [Receiver=3.0.7]
both droplets are runing Debian 6.0 x32

Are you seeing any other connection issues on these droplets? You may want to try using scp to see if you get the same result. You can copy a directory (/var/www in this example) to another droplet using the command:
scp -r /var/www root@0.0.0.0:/var/.
