Scope of GitHub Student Developer Pack on DigitalOcean; 1-Click APP included?

Posted on October 1, 2023

Hello everyone!

I recently got access to the GitHub Student Developer Pack and noticed that it comes with some cool credits for DigitalOcean. šŸŽ‰

I’ve glanced through DigitalOcean’s documentation and it clearly mentions that the account credits do not apply to Marketplace Add-Ons.

I’m wondering if utilizing the credits for deploying applications via 1-Click Apps (like WordPress, for instance) on DigitalOcean falls within the permissible use of the credits? Or is this considered an ā€œAdd-Onā€ and thereby not covered under the credits provided by the GitHub pack? šŸ¤”

If anyone has any experience or insights regarding this, it would be immensely helpful for not only me but also for fellow student developers navigating through this!

Thank you in advance for your time and assistance! šŸ™

Hi there,

Congratulations on getting the GitHub Student Developer Pack! It’s indeed a great resource for students.

To clarify your concerns:

  1. 1-Click Apps vs. Marketplace Add-Ons: DigitalOcean’s 1-Click Apps, such as WordPress, Ghost, and many others, are pre-configured application setups that you can deploy directly to a droplet. Using these does not typically cost extra on top of the Droplet’s cost. So, when you use your GitHub Student Pack credits on DigitalOcean, you can certainly use them to deploy and run 1-Click Apps.

  2. Marketplace Add-Ons: These are typically third-party services or software that integrate with DigitalOcean, and they can have their own separate costs. The credits from the GitHub Student Pack usually do not apply to these add-on services. These might include things like monitoring solutions and other such integrated products which have their own pricing independent from DigitalOcean

In short, deploying applications like WordPress via 1-Click Apps is a permissible use of the credits, and they’re not considered ā€œAdd-Onsā€ in the sense that would prevent you from using your credits.

You should be good to go with 1-Click Apps from the Marketplace using your GitHub credits!

Happy coding, and enjoy exploring all the tools and resources that come with the GitHub Student Developer Pack! šŸš€

Best,

Bobby

Heya @allen7u,

Yes, the credits can be used for 1-Click Apps, App platform usage and so on.

The reason you can’t use your credits for Marketplace Add-Ons is because they are third-party services.

Anything that is provided exclusively by DigitalOcean will have the credits applicable to them.
