Setting up mail as simple as possible

Posted on March 12, 2014

I recently got my nameservers pointing from my domain registrar to my Digital Ocean VPS and everything is working great. I haven’t added the MX records yet. Is there a way for me to use Gmail for any email related to my domain I want? Ex: my domain name is mytographer.com could I use admin@mytographer.com as my email address and access it through Gmail? Or would there be a better option like Thunderbird?

I’m trying to think of ways to keep as much bandwidth and storage off my server as possible. It seems like a lot of the options require me to install a large amount of software on the server for it to run. If I could avoid that, I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

WZY,

Thank you so so so so much!! That was a brilliant suggestion. I just finished setting everything up and it’s so smooth!

When adding MX records in DO it gives you the option to automatically create all the records needed to use Google Apps email. It also gives you the option enter them manually or enter whatever MX records you want, but there is an auto feature for Google Apps records.

Do you want Gmail or Google Apps email? I think to use your own domain you’ll need to pay for Google Apps email.

Once you have that account set up and emails created in the Google Apps account, point your MX records to Google.

You could also use Microsoft’s Outlook.com to host your emails with your own domain. They provide you with 50 email accounts (you can get more upon request). Also it is free, while Google Apps charges $50 annually.
